Māori GIS Conference
GIS: Progress and Protect what you value
13 - 15 May 2009
The conference kaupapa is GIS: progress and protect what you value, which reflects the notion that roopu are increasingly using GIS as a tool to progress their development aspirations as well as protect taonga.
The conference is timely given an increase in practitioners and Roopu who engage in GIS projects such as Land Use mapping (both historical and contemporary); Heritage mapping (placenames/resource mapping); taonga mapping (such as the Rock Art mapping); sites of significance mapping for Council planning documents; Waitangi Tribunal claim mapping; water quality monitoring; farming and forestry development; strategic development opportunities, etc. Additionally, there are several roopu who are reaching out through the informal GIS network as they investigate setting up their own GIS system.
