Aoraki Bound - Relationships
"Mā te tuakana e tika ai te teina, mā te teina e tika ai te tuakana...
Through relationships and respect we can find the way forward"
Outward Bound
Aoraki Bound is the result of a partnership between two values based organizations; Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Outward Bound. Both organizations have similar values and genuine track records in building capacity in people, culture and communities. Ngāi Tahu wished to work in partnership with Outward Bound to develop the programme by accessing Outward Bounds expertise in the field of experiential education using the outdoors as the medium to achieve the objectives that they have set for the Aoraki Bound programme. Outward Bound for its part sees this partnership with Ngāi Tahu as; assisting it towards the achievement of its vision of helping to develop "Better people, Better communities and a Better world" and to assist Outward Bound in its further objective of making Outward Bound relevant to all sectors of New Zealand society.
Aoraki Bound is a first in New Zealand, combining the proven methodology of Outward Bound with the cultural knowledge and aspirations of Ngāi Tahu in developing a course not only for Ngāi Tahu, but for all New Zealanders. The course will be a doorway to Ngāi Tahu culture, tikanga (traditions), mahinga kai (food gathering) and reo (language) supported on an Outward Bound framework of personal and social development through values-based experiential learning in an outdoor environment. The course is designed to reinforce participants Ngāi Tahu identity and offer all cultures, communities, organisations and individuals a better understanding of and comfort with Māori culture.
Meridian Energy
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu has a sponsorship arrangement with Meridian Energy, whereby Meridian funds scholarships to support those who may not otherwise be able to attend due to financial reasons. Each organisation has a culture, a set of values, and a relationship with the environment that comes with a responsibility to protect it. Both Meridian and Ngāi Tahu have brought their strengths to the table, and by fostering understanding and a spirit of co-operation have committed to a relationship witnessed in the form of the Relationship Deed and the Waitaki Catchment Agreement Deed, both signed in August 2000. And more recently have begun work on a 100 year plan. This willingness to work together and the recognition of each other's responsibilities provides a basis for progressing that relationship. By supporting Aoraki Bound, Meridian are developing its relationships with both Ngāi Tahu and Outward Bound and supporting a creative new programme aimed at personal development and ensuring the vibrancy of Ngāi Tahu culture for today's Ngāi Tahu and generations to come.
