Tōpuni

Under the NTCSA 1998, the Department of Conservation has responsibilities in terms of Tōpuni, Deed of Recognition, place name changes, taonga species management and Department of Conservation protocols.

A Tōpuni confirms and places an 'overlay' of Ngāi Tahu values on specific pieces of land managed by the Department of Conservation. A Tōpuni does not override or alter the existing status of land (for example, National Park status), but ensures that Ngāi Tahu values are also recognised, acknowledged and provided for.

On any Tōpuni lands, Conservation Boards are required to have particular regard to Ngāi Tahu values to the area, and to consult and listen to Ngāi Tahu when preparing plans or policies in relation to them.

Tōpuni exist over 14 areas of land of significance to Ngāi Tahu - see map below
