Riparian Planting and Management
In June 2004, Kaupapa Taiao in conjunction with Te Taumutu Rūnanga, Te Rūnanga o Waihao, the Environment and Business Group, Wai Ora Soil Conservation Ltd, National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, the New Zealand Landcare Trust and the New Zealand Ecological Restoration Network completed the 'Riparian Planting and Management Guidelines for Tangata Whenua'.
These guidelines were developed with the assistance of the Ministry for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund and built on previously funded workshops run with landowners in the Auckland region.
The guidelines were developed through two wānanga held with Ngāi Tahu Papatipu Rūnanga. The first held at Taumutu in October 2003 and the second held at Waihao in May 2004.
These guidelines won the Professional/Institutional Category in the Environment Canterbury Resource Management Awards 2004.
Resources
A number of important resources were developed as part of the project including the guidelines themselves (in a workshop manual) including presentations of key riparian management topics, as well as a riparian management quiz, take home activity, and video footage including a step by step guide to the planting process.
