Kaupapa Kereru
In 2000 Horomaka/Banks Peninsula Rūnanga expressed a desire for the Department of Conservation to assess the status and opportunities for enhancement of kererū populations on the Peninsula. As a result the Department of Conservation and Ngāi Tahu allocated some funding towards the proposed project. The Kaupapa Kererū Committee was established and a Project Co-ordinator employed to implement the project.
The Kaupapa Kererū Committee consists of reps from:
- Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke;

To increase numbers and range of kererū on Horomaka/Banks Peninsula through a two-pronged approach:
- Working with the community to raise awareness and appreciation for kereru, including their key role in the restoration of indigenous forest; and
- Researching kereru ecology including numbers, distribution, movements and foods as a basis for improving habitat.
