Pounamu Management
Ngāi Tahu has been working with the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) for a number of years on research to quantify and assess the sustainability of the pounamu (greenstone) resources in Te Waipounamu (the South Island).
This research has involved funding post-graduate study for two Ngāi Tahu students, developing specialised GIS mapping technology as well as producing a valuable assessment tool to guide possible collection and extraction of the resource in key areas.
