Kupu whakataki (Introduction)
The term ‘nohoanga’ (meaning a place to sit) traditionally referred to areas used by our tūpuna in pursuit of food and other natural resources.
This traditional concept has been given contemporary effect as a result of the settlement of the Ngāi Tahu Claim. Nohoanga are areas of lakeshore or riverbank that are to be used to facilitate the gathering natural resources in a modern context . The sites are approximately one hectare in size and allow Ngāi Tahu Whānui (tribal members) temporary, but exclusive, rights to occupy 72 sites throughout Te Wai Pounamu.
Procedure to use a nohoanga site
- Phone 0800 nohoanga (0800 664-62642) at least five working days before you wish to use a nohoanga site. Please note larger groups are required to book at least one month in advance); then
- Provide basic details (eg name, address, contact numbers, vehicle registration number, and number of people intending to stay). NB - random checks will be done to ensure that those applying for the authorisation are entitled to do so and that any past use has been consistent with the conditions of the authorisation.
- If the site is available you will be sent an authorisation (by post, fax or e-mail) before you leave for the nohoanga site; then
- Return the authorisation back to us within five days (with relevant sections completed) following your departure from the nohoanga.

The aim of this information is to provide general information on how nohoanga sites are to be managed for the use and enjoyment of Ngāi Tahu Whānui, including authorisation details, and the disposal of wastewater and rubbish. Authorisation to use a nohoanga site
Nohoanga are for the exclusive use of Ngāi Tahu Whānui. For fairness and environmental reasons, the use of a nohoanga sites is by authorisation only:
Only members of Ngāi Tahu Whānui who are 18 years of age or over and who have enrolled with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu can apply for an authorisation - To check your enrolment status, phone the Ngāi Tahu Whakapapa Unit on 0800 KAITAHU or e-mail: whakapapa@ngaitahu.iwi.nz
Nohoanga will normally be available for use between mid-August and the end of April each year; A maximum of 30 people per night are permitted on any nohoanga site at any one time; Authorisations can be issued for no more than one month at a time (however this may be limited further during busy periods such as the Christmas - New Year period);
Each authorisation covers up to 6 persons per night (if more than 6 people want to use a nohoanga, additional authorisations are required).
