James Tawa – On the path to a career in Tourism

Working for his iwi and strengthening his sense of belonging, as Ngāi Tahu is what motivated 20 year-old James Tawa to apply for a Ngāi Tahu Tourism scholarship as a Year 13 student at Aranui High School. Two years on he is about to complete his second year of a Bachelor of Tourism Management degree at Lincoln University.

Born and bred in New Brighton, Christchurch James is the son of Stan and Merekaraka Tawa. He affiliates to Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki, Ōraka Aparima and Awarua Rūnanga.

James says he very grateful of the opportunities the scholarship has given him, not only by providing assistance enable him to attend university but more importantly because it has opened a pathway for him to connect with and participate as an active iwi member.

"The best thing is the learning", says James. "I want to apply that knowledge in some way to help Ngāi Tahu to continue moving forward and see the success and prosperity of the iwi further increase."

James isn't entirely sure what he would like to do in the future, but one thing he is definite on is that whatever it is it will be with Ngāi Tahu Tourism. "As long as I am working for or with Ngāi Tahu I will be happy in the knowledge that I am contributing to the wellbeing of Ngāi Tahu.

"I believe that Ngāi Tahu whether in or out of the business side of things is who our businesses are set up for. My goal is to play a role in ensuring they are looked after."

When taking time out from his study James enjoys surfing, playing guitar and saxophone and occasionally hanging with whānau and friends.
