Toitū Te Kāinga - Rūnanga Development

Toitū Te Kāinga was established early in 2009 to service the development needs of Papatipu Rūnanga. In particular our focus is on commercial and community development initiatives that create benefits across social, economic, environmental and cultural spheres.

Projects include:

Pounamu Industry Development

Working in partnership with relevant Papatipu Rūnanga to appropriately develop the pounamu resource in Ngāi Tahu ownership. Currently a significant pounamu industry exists in New Zealand, however little benefit from this industry is realised by Ngāi Tahu Whānui.

Development Support

An internal project focussed on developing a four-pillared support structure within the Office for supporting Papatipu Rūnanga development. The structure is currently being designed and will catalyse Papatipu Rūnanga initiatives through providing the resources required to reach goals including; specialist expertise, financial equity, networks, and development processes.

He Whenua Whakatipu

This project began as a research project exploring development options for Māori landowners. It has branched into a project exploring the development of an iconic Ngāi Tahu food industry, through the growing and wild harvesting /angling / gathering of foods for processing into high-value certified cuisine.

Taonga ACE Project

Currently Ngāi Tahu Fisheries Settlement Ltd is working in partnership with Papatipu Rūnanga to develop commercial opportunities around Annual Catch Entitlements (ACE) for taonga species. Toitū Te Kāinga is facilitating this partnership.
