Sandy was elected as Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Representative for Te Taumutu in September 2007.

She believes that one of her key responsibilities to her iwi is to ensure that the view of the people she represents get full and fair democratic representation in any decision-making process.

Throughout her career Sandy has held a number of positions in social services, initially in mental health and more recently in general health. These positions include: Managing a Community Mental Health Service, Māori Child Health Advisor, CDHB, Board member and past chair of the Manawhenua ki Waitaha Māori Health Board, Board member of the Comcare Charitable Trust, Board Member J R McKenzie Trust, Director Windermere Consultancy.

Sandy's qualifications are in management, governance, policy and strategic planning. She is currently specialising in the area of child health. Sandy is married to Richard and they have six adult children between them and at last count, 19 mokopuna.

Sandy's believes Ngāi Tahu has performed well in 2008/09 despite having experienced some very tough times economically. She believes Te Rūnanga will continue to move forward with both prudent and sensible leadership in the business and tribal community and will continue to be a force to be reckoned with.
