Please note: In accordance with Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga’s constitution, it is believed that there are more 1848 Kaumātua who are eligible to form the base membership of this rūnanga. The Whakapapa Unit will be working with Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga to confirm that all of the 1848 Kaumātua who are also the descendants of Tūāhuriri are included in future lists.

Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga executive acknowledged that waiting for the Whakapapa Unit to provide an updated list of 1848 Kaumātua in accordance with clause 5 (a) of the current constitution (their membership clause) would have resulted in a significant delay to the election process. It therefore accepted the existing 1848 Kaumātua list for this election, on 18 May 2009.

However, to ensure that all eligible members of Ngāi Tūāhuriri had a reasonable opportunity to take part in the postal voting process the executive sought registrations from all potential members of Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga for inclusion on the electoral roll and put in place a system which allowed for special votes. Over 500 persons registered with the runanga by the due date and over 100 special votes were issued.
