Toitu te Kura

Toitu te Kura/ whānau development is responsible for:

  • Influencing and monitoring the Crown on delivery of equitable universal outcomes (i.e. health, education and employment) for Ngāi Tahu Whānui.
  • Developing a strong Ngāi Tahu living cultural heritage by encouraging oral traditions, performing arts, festive events and traditional craftsmanship in Ngāi Tahu communities.
  • Encouraging participation by Ngāi Tahu in tribal activities providing access to all benefits available to them (Ngāi Tahu and Universal).
  • Providing quality information on Ngāi Tahu Whānui (stakeholder research) that can be used to influence and to drive development strategy.
  • Managing the relationship (including policy development and contract management) with related entities in the social and cultural delivery field including Te Tapuae o Rehua, He Oranga Pounamu and Te Wakahuruhurumanu.

Te Waka Reo is currently being reviewed to determine its feasibility and whether the scope of delivery can be expanded. The review and implementation will be completed by 30 September 2005 and until then Te Waka Reo will be part of Toitu te Kura.

Third party funding will also be primarily driven out of this area. A fund will be made available annually for projects to be completed. Rūnaka and Culture facilitators will encourage applications to the fund and group of kaumatua/advisors will assist the facilitators to approve the funding. The facilitators will then oversee the funding and its distribution and monitor the project. Specific contract management and monitoring support will be provided from within Toitu Te Mana.
