The photographs and site data accumulated from the work of
SIMRAP form the largest and most comprehensive collection of information
on rock art sites in New Zealand. However, this is only one part of the total body
of knowledge that researchers may seek to use in the study of rock art.

Further information held in institutions such as art galleries or museums, or in private collections, may include actual pieces of rock art removed from their original locations, early recordings of rock art i.e. sketches, tracings or photographs, or written accounts of specific sites. It may also include more recent academic research generated by universities, or contemporary art forms inspired by ancient designs.

Part of the Trust’s work involves developing an accurate and systematic inventory of
these resources, providing a powerful tool for use in management, education and research.
