Maerewhenua - North Otago

The majority of the rock art in the lower Maerewhenua area has
been
applied as liquid paint, and depicts a variety of subjects ranging from
the
naturalistic, i.e. in the form of birds and reptilian forms to abstract
designs,
some of which are distinctive to this particular area.

Figures in typical early style occur in close
proximity to drawings of
European sailing ships and copperplate script,
indicating that the practice
of rock drawing has spanned a
long period of time in this area.
