The management of rock art is problematic because
the sites are part of the natural landscape. Over 500 rock
art sites have been recorded by SIMRAP; of these only a very
small percentage are actively protected and managed.
It is the objective of the Trust to ensure that in the future
all of the rock art sites within the rohe or territory of Ngāi Tahu are subject
to some degree of management. This may range from passive management
i.e. holding accurate information on the location of sites, to active
management
or individual site management plans, physical protection and conservation.
