Perhaps the most well-known Māori rock art site in the
Te Wai Pounamu or the South Island, Takiroa is significant for
its high concentration of in-filled red designs most notably the large
horizontally-set scrolled figure in the main shelter, and for the
variety of different techniques employed in its creation.
Strategically placed on a main arterial route from the coast
to the interior, the good shelter qualities of Takiroa have made
it a popular camping place for many centuries.
