South Island - Sites with Public Access - Weka Pass

Weka Pass - North Canterbury

Weka Pass is another of Te Waipounamu the South Island’s
more
well-known rock art sites. However, the most obvious and
visible art in the
Weka Pass shelters are the figures that were retouched
by W.R.B. Oliver,
Director of the Dominion Museum in the 1930's. Approximately
50 figures
were over-painted or ‘freshened’ with house paint to make them more visible to tourists, leaving an estimated 100 figures in their natural state. The untouched figures are very faint, but still visible amongst the retouched art.
